A lot of propane fire pits are capable of 60,000 BTUs which is a good amount of heat. Most pits come with efficiency ratings as well so get the most efficient that you can afford. It's not a good idea to skimp on this as spending more at the time of purchase may save a bit on propane purchases in the future. Propane is cheaper than fire wood but you still don't want to use any more than you need to.

The weather is always changing so it's a good idea to get a fire pit that can adapt to your needs. Many good quality models come with adjustable flow rates and temperature control which can help you save on gas while keeping you at just the right temperature.
